Message from the Icelandic Transport Authority regarding continuing education for professional drivers

„As previously announced, a new curriculum for the continuing education of professional drivers came into effect on February 18th. With this change, it is now mandatory for professional drivers to take at least one course that includes a practical component.

A deadline of June 1st was given for those drivers who had already begun their continuing education to renew their licenses with professional qualifications without taking a practical course. Professional drivers received a notification on island.is with this information on the same day the curriculum took effect.

Now that the deadline has passed, all professional drivers must have taken a practical course to be able to renew their licenses with professional qualifications (code 95). No exemptions or further extensions will be granted beyond those already provided. It is therefore important that course providers inform their students about these requirements and guide them in selecting courses in accordance with them.

It is important to note that in order to get the 95 code on a driver’s license for those who don’t already have it on their licenses, they need to renew their driver’s license at the district commissioner’s office, regardless of the previous expiration date.

We remind you that you can always send us inquiries at okurettindi@samgongustofa.is if you have any questions, and we also remind you of our phone hours between 9 and 11 on weekdays, tel. 480-6095.“
